Hunting

If you’ve followed along with us, you know that we are deeply invested in eating and cooking healthy food and sourcing the highest quality ingredients possible – and wild, free animals that we’ve hunted are some of the best sources of meat we can find. We went out to harvest our own meat and discovered an entire world of patience, hard work, and peaceful days spent out in nature. Our preferred method of hunting is bow hunting, but we are excited to take on any hunting adventures that we can!

The First Hunt

Come along on our first ever bow hunt in picturesque Wisconsin as we learn about wildlife conservation, develop archery skills, and discover an even deeper connection to animals, nature, and our food. Friends, hunters, and a conservation expert share their experiences and expertise as Tyler learns to embrace his inner hunter with a beautiful whitetail buck, a ton of patience, and even some heartbreak. This is our First Hunt.

Florida Duck Hunting

This winter we got to spend a morning with our friend Ben McCann and his buddies hunting some beautiful Florida ducks. Our morning turned out to be quite an adventure as Tyler practiced his terrible shotgun skills, we all got harassed by locals and questioned by cops, and the Wild Hixsons got to chow down on some tasty wild duck with friends.

Unexpected Quarries

In hunting, as in life, things don’t always go as planned. In fact, this happens so often that we have discovered a pattern in our recent hunting experiences: coming home with a different animal than we expected! Being adaptable is the name of the game in hunting, and because of our ability to switch gears, we have yet to face a hunt where we leave truly empty-handed. Our unexpected quarries make for good stories, full bellies, and a newfound respect for the animals we hunt.

Missouri Summer

Our Missouri Summer has been filled with firsts: Andrea’s first squirrel hunt, Tyler’s first catch & keep fishing adventure, and our first time breaking in our new shotgun. Despite the heat, humidity, and a plethora of ticks, we wouldn’t have our summer any other way. We’ve got a full freezer, happy hearts, and a healthy sense of accomplishment from some successful hunting and fishing.

Michigan Bowhunt

The Wild Hixsons are back for Round 2 on our latest whitetail deer bowhunt, and things look quite a bit different this year as we build on the lessons we learned last year. Come along to a secret location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, sit with us in tree stands on chilly mornings and peaceful evenings, and join us for a thrilling chase on our Michigan Bowhunt.

Andrea’s Musings on Hunting & Jiu Jitsu

Andrea's Musings on Hunting & Jiu JitsuJiu jitsu doesn’t seem much like hunting. It’s usually in a gym with a lot of other people, and a major attraction of the sport is the ability to train in a safe way, with a relative lack of consequences.  But I began my jiu...

Becoming a Hunter
